A Study in Reflection and Density

Material Studies II revisits the Cube + Void collection, recasting its reductive designs in mirrored aluminum and richly pigmented stone, marking Kalon’s first use of stone. Redesigned in response to these materials, the forms shift in proportion and construction, refining mass into tensile profiles and introducing new weight and density.

Vibrant and reflective, the collection plays with illusion and depth. The mirrored planes place each piece in dialogue with its surroundings and, when positioned together, reflect one another, creating a subtle confusion of depth and mass. Volume shifts and edges dissolve, while stone asserts density and tonal richness. The material shift alters how each object lives in a room—at times quiet and integrated, at others commanding and central.

As part of the Material Studies series, this chapter asks whether timeless design can sustain richer, more expressive materials.

The collection includes a coffee table, a bench, and four cube variations.

Material Studies is an ongoing series that revisits existing Kalon forms through new materials. We approach each study with the belief that material drives design—bringing distinct opportunities and constraints that reshape structure, proportion, and presence. Through this process, we ask whether a form can sustain its integrity across materials, contexts, and time.
