A Study in Material and Environment

Material Studies is the recipient of the AZ Award and an Interior Design Best of the Year Honoree.

Material Studies I marks the first chapter in the Material Studies series, revisiting the Rugosa collection through new materials developed for outdoor use. Originally designed in solid Western Sugar Pine, Rugosa’s pared-down forms are recast in powder-coated aluminum, bronzed glass, and durable woven textiles, introducing color, reflectivity, and durability suited to the elements. The shift in material transforms how the work lives in space, allowing the collection to move from interior settings into open air.

The elegant, reduced silhouettes of Rugosa’s original designs take on a lighter, more graphic presence in metal. Saturated color and reflective surfaces respond to the tones of the natural landscape, pulling sky, water, and surrounding architecture into the work itself. By bringing Rugosa outdoors, the collection expands the idea of the living space, extending the language of the interior into the exterior.

As part of the Material Studies series, this chapter looks at how new materials change the way a design functions, endures, and lives in space. In adapting Rugosa for outdoor use, Material Studies I begins an investigation into how reflection, color, and environment alter the experience of form—an idea that continues in later studies.

The collection includes a lounge chair, coffee table, side table, and dining table.

Material Studies is an ongoing series that revisits existing Kalon forms through new materials. We believe material drives design—each material brings distinct opportunities and constraints that reshape structure, proportion, and presence. Through this process, we ask whether a form can sustain its integrity across materials, contexts, and time.
