There are only 11 mattress recycling facilities in the country. 10 million mattresses a year end up in landfills. Polyurethane foam and synthetic materials and fibers used in the construction of conventional mattresses are not biodegradable.Organic certifications (such as USDA Certified Organic) certifies the crop only, the farmer and growing methods used. It does not certify anything post harvest, such as the processing of the raw material into a product. GOTS certifies the conversion of the raw material into a finished product. GOTS looks at (soaps, chemicals and pesticides used, any additives, etc) ensuring that the finished cloth still meets organic standards. Most cotton bedding is treated with formaldehyde to reduce wrinkling. Formaldehyde is also used to make mattresses. It is one of the adhesives that hold mattresses components together. Formaldehyde has been linked to asthma, allergies, and lung, nose, and throat cancers.Conventional mattresses are typically full of toxic chemicals and made of materials that are linked to a long list of serious health complications including SIDS, asthma, allergies, reproductive toxicity, respiratory problems, skin irritations, cancer, and more.Polyurethane foam is made from petroleum, and it can emit volatile organic compounds (V.O.C.’s), which have been linked to respiratory irritation and other health problems, according to both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. No government agency regulates the labeling of mattresses as “organic” or “natural.” Trade groups offer no quidelines for using the terms. Companies can use a latex blend and call it natural. Others can use an organic ticking and call the entire mattress natural. Synthetic fibers are proprietary and manufacturers are not required to disclose their composition. It is frequently impossible for consumer to know what is in a mattress when as typically only one or two aspects are described.
