Material Studies II

March 26 – April 30, 2026

Kalon presents Material Studies II, the second chapter in an ongoing series that revisits existing studio forms through new materials. Debuting in the Los Angeles showroom, the exhibition marks Kalon’s first use of stone, recasting the Cube + Void collection in mirrored aluminum and richly pigmented marble and quartzite.

Rather than applying new finishes to familiar objects, the work was redesigned in direct response to these materials. Proportions shift. Profiles become more tensile. Weight gives way to reflection, while stone introduces density, veining, and tonal depth. Across the collection, mass appears to dissolve as mirrored planes pull the surrounding architecture into view.

“Endurance does not come from neutrality. It comes from proportion, construction, and a deep understanding of material. The form must be strong enough to withstand change.”
— Johann Pauwen

The exhibition includes a coffee table, bench, and four cube variations. Positioned together, the pieces create shifting relationships of light, volume, and perception. Edges blur, surfaces multiply, and forms alternate between quiet integration and commanding presence.

Material Studies reflects a central premise within Kalon’s practice: that material is not decorative, but fundamental to how an object is conceived, constructed, and experienced over time. With Material Studies II, the studio expands its material language while reaffirming a long-held commitment to enduring form, structural clarity, and design that remains relevant beyond novelty.

Material Studies is an ongoing series that asks how form endures across materials, contexts, and time.

Material Studies II is on view at the Kalon Showroom through April 30, 2026.
